We did not have to suffer. The USA did not have to suffer. We saw Covid-19 (the latest and strongest corona virus) when it was isolated to China and we knew what was happening. We were led astray by faulty leadership. If you doubt that, you haven't been paying attention; in that case it would serve you well to read this.
This march into the abyss occurred because the current occupant of the White House believes in conspiracy theories of right-wing media first and foremost. Only when the consequences are undeniable and the pandemic is in our neighborhoods, as it is now, did he begin listening to the scientists and medical experts.
Following this, we are in a national crisis now. This is an economic, cultural and health-related crisis. This president who believes he must promote himself as the architect of the stock market gains of the early years of his presidency now wears the dunce cap for allowing it to plummet because of his failure to act. Although Trump has adopted the idea that we're in a "war" against this virus, he has been mostly used this verbiage to promote his own image and attempt to boost his popularity. In fact, most of the war has been in states and localities competing against each other because the federal government has been so unresponsive under Trump. Trump now promotes the idea that he's just a backup when he can't fix something or co-opt someone else's success.
Trump could have and should have acted decisively to build up the national stockpile of N-95 masks, surgical masks and respirators, but that was interfering with his golf game at his own resorts. How else can he keep enriching himself if he can't obligate the Secret Service to pay his companies?
Not only has Trump's poor management affected the national stockpile, he also sought to handicap the USA to deal with Covid-19 by eliminating the agency most capable of predicting it and stopping it cold.
While Trump's friends at Fox News cheered "conspiracy", Trump did the same. However, Fox News was scared. The conspiracy cheers are a regular mechanism of the conspiracy network, Fox News, but even Fox News knew that Covid-19 was dangerous and they began to clean and sanitize their offices as they encouraged their viewers to believe everything was just fine.
On Saturday, March 18th, Italy became the country with the highest number of fatalities attributable to Covid-19. The virus that had originated in China, had advanced to devastate Europe.
On Saturday, April 11th, the USA became the country with the most lives lost to Covid-19. Every one of those deaths happened while Donald J. Trump was president. He could have prevented them all.
Americans continue to respond to the call to action to help those who help us. We do it all while our president, Mr. Trump, deflects responsibility for any of the damage that he has caused. There are so many stories around the country that inspire us and that serve as reminders of World War II. It is sad that so many Americans are suffering financially right now and it is disheartening to watch the president spin, manipulate and outright lie at every opportunity during the daily briefings.
Have faith that the USA will come back from this, but know that you must vote in November so that we can truly be great. We need a change in leadership, not just to restore our reputation, but also to save our lives and our livelihoods.
